Taper vs fade: what's the difference?

Taper vs fade: what's the difference?

A taper gradually shortens the hair only around the sideburns and neckline while keeping length; a fade goes down to the skin and climbs much higher up the sides. A taper is subtler and office-friendly, a fade is bolder and more graphic.

The taper: clean, subtle, versatile

A taper is all about the outline: the neckline and sideburns are tightened, but you barely see skin. It suits the office, curly hair you want to keep full, and anyone who wants a sharp cut that grows out well.

The fade: contrast and character

A fade starts at the skin (skin fade) or a very short length and blends upwards. The higher it goes, the stronger the contrast. It's the cut that pops most in photos — and the one that demands the most precision from your barber.

  • Low fade: starts just above the ear, subtle.
  • Mid fade: halfway up the sides, the most requested.
  • High fade: climbs near the temples, high contrast.
  • Burst fade: curves around the ear, great with curls or a mohawk.

Which one should you get?

If you want to look sharp every day and stretch time between visits, go for a taper. If you want a bold look and you see your barber every 2–3 weeks, the fade is for you. Not sure? Bring a photo — we adapt the height to your head shape and hairline.
